Peter Lau, Materials Management, replaced old needles and syringes with safe alternatives as part of an overall conversion on February 7 in the Tower and Connors Center (CWN). All other remaining unsafe products in which a safety alternative was identified were also replaced with their safety alternative. All Ambulatory areas swapped over their products with Materials Management on February 8, and the Code Carts were converted on the 9. To the degree possible, all non-safety products have been removed from all clinical areas. The non-safety products that have been approved as exceptions are available from the STAT Room (ext. 4929 or by beeper #16538 - 24 hours a day/seven days a week). Some areas have been allowed to retain a small amount of excepted product for a limited time period and for limited use during the transition. These areas, in addition to Materials Management, will monitor the requests for these excepted products, to assure appropriate usage. If you have any questions, contact Karen Nelson, Needle Safety Team Leader (ext. 5810).
